The Art of Ancient Mexico

Researched by Kevin

How do we learn about ancient Mayan people? The answer is by learning about their art. Their pictures, their sculptures and their buildings, is how you learn about ancient Mayan people.

Influence

Their gods influenced Mexican art. Some of their gods were Xipe the god of spring and vegetation, Quetzalcoatl; one of the greatest gods is a plumed serpent with green feathers, and Talc, the god of rain and lightning. The Aztecs were strong warriors who conquered many Indian tribes of ancient Mexico. This warring spirit influenced their art. They created helmets, shield, and knives. Another influence is their ball games and their daily life activities.

 Art Forms

The Mayans had many different art forms. Some of art forms are sculpting and architecture. The Mayans also painted and built statues, and made helmets. They even made the pyramid of the sun that covers ten and a half acres. They drew codices too. Codices are pictures stories about people and ceremonies.

Style/ Subject

sungod.jpg (7027 bytes)The Aztecs used many different geometric shapes to decorate their art. Their art doesn’t look like it’s real. Seashell and clay were used most. Some subjects were Aztec gods, warriors, people, and animals. The Aztecs mostly made detailed sculptures.

So the art of ancient Mexico reflects their lives. Their art told us what they look like. Their art is them!
